Let me tell you, retaking business class was a humbling experience. Especially when it came to the whole “build your business the right way” part. One of the things that got me a little riled up was this test where they basically told me to take the “why” out of my business plan.

You see, when I first wrote it out, I poured my heart and soul into it, explaining the “why” behind my business, the reason I started in the first place.

When I sent it out to get feedback, everyone said the same thing: “Take the ‘why’ out.

This time, I wanted to approach things with an open mind. I wanted to hear what investors and business folks had to say, to get their perspective and remove my own personal bias from my business plan. Strip away my personal bias, and focus on the cold, hard numbers.

So I did. I took out the “why” behind why I started my business.

Big mistake.

Suddenly, people were telling me to put it back in. Here’s the thing: the “why” is the fire under my feet. It’s the story of losing my best friend, my partner, while also becoming a new mother. It was my children, my late partner, that pushed me forward.
